Double decker bus ride

A trip to London wouldn’t be complete without a ride on an iconic red double-decker bus, would it? Well, unfortunately not all of the buses are still red (boo!) but the experience of riding on a double-decker bus is something you need to experience at least once.

London is one of the most famous cities in the world, and it has a unique feel other cities struggle to capture due to its extensive history, melting pot of culture, and years upon years of architectural history. London is the world’s most visited city, if you measure by international arrivals, and where better to get a bird’s eye tour than from the top of one of their famous buses?

In one short trip, you’ll see London’s incredible history living side-by-side with modern life; you’ll ride past Hampton Court Palace (built way back in 1529) and then see the London Eye (1998) and the incredible Shard of Glass, the 95-story skyscraper built in 2009.

Double-decker bus in London

A London double-decker ride isn’t complete without a trip over the Thames, ideally at the magnificent Tower Bridge, constructed in 1886, and if the weather isn’t quite on your side – don’t worry, there are closed-top buses as well as the open-top tour buses you see around the city.

Best of all, you don’t have to do a whole bus tour at once, instead, use the hop-on-hop-off bus tours to jump on for the tour and take the bus to your next destination, instead of traveling downstairs to navigate the tube (which isn’t too difficult – promise!). For this tour, you simply buy a ticket that remains valid for 1 or 2 days depending on the company, and stay on the bus for whichever part of the tour you want to enjoy.

Don’t forget that you can also take a night tour! These bus tours explore London’s darker side, and no bucket list trip to London is complete without a Jack the Ripper, Sherlock Holmes or ghostly bus tour. London has so much to offer and so much history to hear, so make sure you see it all before you catch your flight home!
