Dreamed of time travel? While time travel may not be possible, there is a way to have one foot in tomorrow.
The International Date Line is an invisible line we humans made up that signifies where one day ends and the next begins. The line runs from the North Pole down to the South Pole (or vice versa, if you’d like) through the Pacific Ocean. While it was once a completely straight line, it now deviates somewhat to avoid landmasses, so no one has to decide whether it’s Monday or Tuesday as they take a trip to the local store.
This invisible line – dividing one space and time from another, lands itself a place on many a traveler’s bucket list, but not enough that this bucket list item is easy to do. Doesn’t that just make it all the more enticing? So, how can you possibly be in the two time zones at once if there are no landmasses to stand on?
Well, you have a few different options. It used to be that you could stand on one of Fiji’s islands and have a foot in each time frame, but understandably the residents there found leaving their home at 8am on a Monday and arriving at work ten minutes later at 9.10am on a Tuesday was a little frustrating. Now, the only landmass you can stand on is freezing Antarctica, so you have to get more creative to experience the line.
Your first option is to take a boat. The International Date Line runs between American Samoa and Independent Samoa, where a ferry runs between the two islands, but you’ll probably have a more comfortable trip if you take a cruise. Many liners who cross the line make an event out of the crossing and celebrate the moment you cross – meaning that, at least for a moment, you will be half in each time zone.
If you are a true adventurer, charter a boat. How cool does that sound? Seriously, if you are able to, the best way to experience the line is to hire a boat (and probably a captain) to take you out to the line and stop the boat so you can spend all the time you like time traveling between the two time zones!
